009 FXUS65 KVEF 052316 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 416 PM PDT Fri Jun 5 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... * Quiet weather and above-normal temperatures stick around today. * Expect increasing southwest winds and cooling temperatures this weekend and into next week. && .DISCUSSION...through Thursday. Our stretch of calm and unseasonably warm weather culminates today. Temperatures are forecast to be nearly identical to yesterday, with 100-110 generally across the Mojave Desert and 90s in the southern Great Basin and Arizona Plateau. This results in widespread moderate HeatRisk with a pocket of major HeatRisk in the Las Vegas Valley where overnight lows remain elevated thanks to urban influences. Some temperature relief arrives this weekend and continues into next week as troughing settles over the western US. Afternoon highs are forecast to be near normal values for early/mid June. With the better forcing staying north and limited moisture, precipitation chances are likely to be confined to the Great Basin. PoPs across our southern Great Basin zones only get up to ~20% early next week. The main story with this trough is going to be the increase in southwest wind and fire danger. Chances for 40+ mph gusts on Saturday are moderate (40-50%), but not quite high enough to justify issuing a Wind Advisory. Won't be surprised to see a few gusts of 40- 45 mph in the Kingman and Barstow areas, but these should be fairly sporadic and localized. However, boating impacts appear more likely (70%), thus have opted to issue a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Mead and Lake Mohave on Saturday. Winds subside slightly on Sunday but tick back up next week as the trough gets reinforced. There remains some uncertainty in exactly how strong/impactful the winds may be during this time, but will certainly be enough to keep fire danger elevated. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast Package...Southwest winds gusting to around 20KT will continue into the evening before diminishing after sunset.
